Take us back to your early days in Mumbai—what sparked your interest in cricket, and who inspired you the most during your childhood?
Cricket has always been a part of life in Mumbai. I started playing in the local maidans just like every other kid. What made it different for me was the support I got from my father. He saw potential in me early on and even built a turf pitch behind our house so I could train properly. I looked up to Yuvraj Singh a lot. The way he batted with confidence and flair really inspired me. Jacques Kallis was another big inspiration because of the balance he had as an all-rounder.
You took a brief break from cricket during your teenage years. What made you return, and how did that time shape your mindset?
Yes, I had to take a break when I was around 14 because of financial issues and fitness problems. I had put on a lot of weight, and it became difficult to continue. But cricket was always in my heart. I came back at 19 with full focus. My father helped me train every single day, and I lost around 35 kilos. That phase made me mentally stronger and taught me discipline. It made me realize how much I loved the game and how badly I wanted to make it.

Was there a defining moment when you felt, "Yes, I can play for India"? Do you recall the feelings and emotions of that time?
When I got selected for India A, I started to feel that I belonged at that level. The selectors appreciated my natural game and told me I had something different. That gave me confidence. But the real moment was getting the call-up to the Indian team. I was emotional. The first person I called was my father. It was a special moment for both of us, and it felt like all the years of hard work had finally paid off.
How do you balance the pressure of expectations with staying true to your game?
Pressure is always there, especially when you're playing for your country. But I try to keep things simple and focus on what I can control. Preparation, mindset, and staying true to my process are key for me. I have learned from senior players like Virat (Bhai), who once told me that ups and downs are part of the game, and I just need to back myself. That advice really helped me.

Your transformation in terms of fitness has been remarkable. What changes did you make to your Diet and routine, and how has it impacted your performance?
Fitness was a big turning point for me. Earlier, I struggled with weight and movement, but once I got serious about training, things changed. I followed a strict diet, worked hard in the gym, and made sure I recovered well. My father played a huge role in keeping me disciplined. Fitness has improved my speed, power, and confidence on the field. It has helped me in both batting and bowling.
As an all-rounder, how do you structure your training to maintain both bowling rhythm and batting power?
It’s important to manage both sides carefully. I plan my training sessions with my coaches. Some days are focused more on bowling, and others on batting. I also try to include match-like situations in practice so I stay sharp in both departments. Recovery and rest are just as important as the training itself.

You’re known for your clean hitting and aggressive intent. How would you describe your batting philosophy?
My approach to batting is simple. If the ball is in my zone, I go for it. I like to play with intent and back my strengths. That comes from my early training with my father, who always encouraged me to be fearless. I enjoy power-hitting, but I also know the value of playing according to the situation and rotating the strike when needed.
What part of your game are you currently most focused on improving?
Right now, I’m working a lot on my bowling. I want to be more consistent and effective in different match situations. I’m focusing on accuracy, variations, and overall control. On the batting side, I’m constantly trying to improve my shot selection and game awareness.
Your father played a key role in your early training. How important has your family's support been throughout your journey?
My family has been everything to me, especially my father. He left his career as a wrestler to focus on mine. He built a practice pitch at home, gave me throwdowns every day, made sure I ate right, and kept pushing me to stay disciplined. Even when we had limited resources, he never let me feel that. Whatever I’ve achieved today is because of their support.
Now that you're a father yourself, how has parenthood changed your perspective on life and cricket?
Becoming a father has been a beautiful and grounding experience. It gives me a new kind of motivation. Now I don’t just play for myself but also for my family. It has brought more balance to my life and made me value time and relationships even more. I want to set the right example, not just as a cricketer but as a person.
