In India, an athlete-like physique is often presumed to be achievable only by following a strict diet, high-intensity workouts, and a demanding routine. But what works for professional athletes doesn’t necessarily work for everybody. The Indian cricket team has set a high benchmark for fitness, and its players have often sparked curiosity among fans eager to know the secret behind their health and endurance.
From Tea and Samosas to a Protein-Rich Morning Routine
Talking with Jatin Sapru on Like An Athlete, one of the fittest cricketers in the Indian cricket team, all-rounder Axar Patel revealed that his diet is surprisingly simpler than many would assume. Reflecting on his earlier eating habits, he shared that his mornings often consisted of tea while skipping breakfast, followed by puffs, samosas, patties, and sev puri. Calling it the worst diet he ever had, he explained how a conversation with his dietitian changed his perspective and helped him commit to one habit that became a permanent part of his routine. “My trainer had seen my worst diet. He understood my mentality and told me that if I wasn’t having breakfast, at least I should start my day with protein,” he said.
The Breakfast Axar Patel Swears By
Every morning, he now focuses on having a protein-rich breakfast consisting of one scoop of whey protein, walnuts, almonds, almond milk, and a banana. No matter what happens, this is one thing he refuses to compromise on. Furthermore, if he needs an instant energy boost, he adds an espresso shot to the shake. “I need exactly 25 grams of protein” in that meal, Axar said. Simple yet effective, his focus is on starting the day with nutrient-rich food that fuels his energy.
Why He Prefers a Simple Approach to Nutrition
Breaking the notion that fitness always requires an overly strict diet, he believes in keeping things simple rather than following the complex process of weighing every meal and counting calories. He ensures that every meal provides enough nutrition to keep him full and energised without turning healthy eating into a tiresome habit. “He told me that if I give my body these nutrients every morning, it will get used to receiving them regularly and function accordingly.”
Final Thought
Far from the stereotypical athletic diet, Patel's routine is rooted in mindful eating and prioritising nutrition. Rather than making healthy eating feel restrictive, he believes in building sustainable habits that are easy to follow. His approach shows that maintaining good health doesn't always require an overly complicated diet—sometimes, consistency with simple, nutritious choices can make all the difference.
