Indian beauty care has seen a drastic surge in demand, driven by growing awareness and the harsh effects of pollution, sweat and dirt. Yet, while skin protection is well covered with face washes, serums, moisturisers and sunscreens, hair often gets neglected, even as many Indians battle hair fall and thinning.
Even after recognising the issue, solutions often limit themselves to a simple oil massage or buying a costly product in the hope of instant results without consulting a doctor, which often leads to disappointment. The Indian market now offers several reputable brands with hair serums containing ingredients that support hair growth and reduce hair fall. But effective results come only from understanding the cause, then choosing a serum with the right active ingredient at the right concentration.
To understand the root cause and how each growth‑serum ingredient works, we'll break down their properties and functions.
The ingredients that work
Redensyl
A patented complex of DHQG (dihydroquercetin glucoside) and EGCG2 that targets outer root sheath (ORSc) stem cells of hair follicles, acting as a chemical wake-up call to bring follicles back into the anagen (growth) phase. During hair fall, many follicles prematurely enter the telogen (resting) phase, where they stop producing new hair. Well‑researched manufacturer data report up to a 214% increase in anagen activity and new hair counts at 3% concentration over 3–4 months of consistent use.
Procapil
A combination of apigenin, oleanolic acid and biotinyl‑GHK peptide that assists blood flow to follicles and restricts enzymes that produce DHT, which can shrink follicles and impair nutrient delivery. It also strengthens hair by anchoring the root to surrounding cells, resulting in slower thinning and stronger strands.
Anagain
Derived from organic pea sprouts, Anagain stimulates dermal papilla cells at the base of follicles, extending the hair's growth phase so strands can grow longer and thicker, resulting in a fuller, healthier-looking scalp. Instead of falling early, hair stays in the growing phase for longer. Clinical studies show up to a 78% increase in hair growth and around a 28% reduction in hair loss over 2–3 months with a 2–4% concentration.
Rosemary oil
Rosemary oil contains a mix of natural compounds that, in one small clinical trial, performed similarly to 2% minoxidil over six months. It may improve blood flow to follicles and inhibit enzymes that produce DHT, which can shrink follicles and hinder hair growth. Being natural, it is generally well tolerated, though rare irritation or allergy is possible; patch testing is recommended. Visible results typically appear over about six months of regular use.
Minoxidil
Initially discovered as a treatment for high blood pressure, its unusual hair‑growth effect in users led to its use as a leading topical drug for hair loss. Applied to the scalp, it widens blood vessels that deliver nutrients to the follicle matrix and pushes miniaturised follicles back into the anagen phase for a longer duration. Initially, it can cause a noticeable increase in hair fall; this “shedding phase” pushes out weak, thin hairs to make way for new growth.
The ingredients that are mostly marketing
Topical biotin, collagen and keratin serums are the ingredients you often see highlighted in advertisements, on television, in shops and online. Though biotin, keratin and collagen are important for hair health, they work best when ingested orally (so your digestive system can break them down into building blocks for your body to deliver to the follicle) or used purely as surface conditioners to reduce breakage. As leave-on “growth” actives in serums, the evidence is weak.
The three rules for using any hair serum correctly
For any clinically supported serum—minoxidil, Redensyl, Anagain or rosemary oil—visible results come only with correct application, patience and adequate nutrition.
Apply to the scalp, not the hair shafts: Massage the serum into the scalp rather than onto the surface of the hair; proper absorption is key to results.
Be consistent: Consistency decides the outcome—try not to miss applications during the course if you want to achieve your desired result.
Give it time: No matter how costly or how frequently you use the serum, visible results typically take 3–4 months, so stay consistent and trust the process.
